Make an Impact in This Role
We’re looking for a Workday Payroll, Time Tracking & Absence Architect to join the Thrive Pet Healthcare Home Office team.
In this role, you’ll serve as the senior in-house subject matter expert responsible for the strategy, architecture, design, and optimization of Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence, with Payroll as the primary focus area.
This role will lead complex configuration, enhancement delivery, compliance design, and production support for a distributed workforce of salaried and hourly employees across hospitals, field operations, and home office functions nationwide.
Your expertise will be critical in ensuring accurate payroll processing, compliant multistate time capture, shift-based pay rules, and scalable time-off administration that supports our 24/7 veterinary operations.
 
What You’ll Do
Workday Payroll Architecture (Primary Focus)
  • Serve as the lead architect for Workday Payroll configuration, optimization, and roadmap planning
  • Own end-to-end payroll design across earnings, deductions, tax setup, pay groups, pay calendars, and payroll processing
  • Lead design and governance of pay inputs, one-time payments, retro processing, off-cycle payrolls, and payroll corrections
  • Architect and maintain General Ledger payroll posting design, including balancing, account derivation, worktags, and reconciliation requirements
  • Partner with Finance to ensure payroll results align to GL, cost center, and labor reporting structures
  • Drive audit readiness, SOX controls, and payroll compliance standards
  • Lead testing strategy for Workday releases, tax updates, year-end activities, and payroll changes
  • Provide training as needed
  • Creation of training materials
Workday Time Tracking (Secondary / Heavy Focus)
  • Architect scalable Time Tracking solutions for hourly workers, hospital operations, and shift-based care teams
  • Design complex rules for shift differentials, overnight shifts, weekend premiums, holiday pay, and on-call structures
  • Lead multistate time design requirements, including:
  • meal and rest break compliance
  • overtime rules
  • daily overtime and double time
  • state-specific premium calculations
  • predictive scheduling considerations where applicable
  • Optimize time entry validations, exception handling, missed punches, and manager approvals
  • Support integrations between Time Tracking and Payroll to ensure clean downstream processing
  • Design scalable time solutions for 24/7 hospital operations and variable staffing models
 
Workday Absence (Tertiary Focus)
  • Configure and optimize time off plans including PTO, sick, parental, LOA, and other absence programs
  • Ensure absence plans align cleanly with Payroll and Time Tracking impacts
  • Support policy harmonization across acquired hospitals and multistate operations
  • Partner with HR and Benefits on leave compliance, eligibility, and accrual accuracy
  • What Success Looks Like
  • Payroll runs are accurate, auditable, and processed on time
  • Shift differential and multistate hourly rules are scalable and compliant
  • Time data flows cleanly into payroll with minimal manual intervention
  • Time off balances, accruals, and leave integrations are accurate
  • Hospital leaders and payroll teams trust the system and reporting outputs
  • Enhancements are delivered with strong testing discipline and minimal disruption
 Tier 1 Production Support + Triage Operations
  • Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 triage leadership across HR and Payroll-related Workday support tickets
  • Serve as the escalation point for intake, prioritization, issue categorization, and routing standards
  • Triage inbound tickets across functional towers including:
    • HCM
    • Compensation
    • Benefits
    • Talent
    • Performance
    • Payroll Impacts
    • Time Tracking
    • Access Management
  • Drive root cause identification across configuration defects, security issues, process failures, integrations, and user support questions
  • Establish SLA-based support standards, intake workflows, ownership models, and escalation paths
  • Partner with HR Operations, Payroll, and COEs to ensure tickets are resolved with strong communication and minimal business disruption
  • Identify repeat ticket trends and convert production issues into roadmap enhancements, knowledge articles, or automation opportunities
  • Maintain documentation, triage playbooks, and support governance standards that scale across the HR technology ecosystem
 
What You Bring
  • 5 to 7 years of progressive Workday experience
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Workday Payroll configuration and payroll operations
  • Strong experience with General Ledger, pay inputs, payroll processing, and payroll reconciliation
  • Extensive expertise in Workday Time Tracking for hourly workforces
  • Proven success designing shift differential frameworks and multistate compliance rules
  • Experience supporting large, distributed environments with 24/7 operations
  • Strong knowledge of Workday Absence and time-off plan administration
  • Experience with release testing, production support, and vendor/cross-functional coordination
  • Ability to translate operational payroll and workforce requirements into scalable Workday solutions
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to support Payroll, HR, Finance, and field operations leaders
  • Preferred
    • Experience in healthcare, veterinary, retail, hospitality, or other shift-based environments
    • Experience supporting post-acquisition harmonization of payroll and time policies
    • Knowledge of Workday reporting and Prism/advanced payroll analytics
    • Experience with payroll audit and compliance controls
